Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp achiote seeds
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a dry skillet, toast the achiote seeds over medium heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool.

  2. Grind the toasted achiote seeds into a fine powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.

  3. In a small bowl, combine the ground achiote seeds, vinegar, cumin, garlic powder, oregano, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, orange juice, and vegetable oil. Mix well to form a paste.

  4. Transfer the achiote paste to a jar or airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
