How To Make Prawn Gumbo Recipe
A delicious and flavorful Cajun-style dish made with prawns, vegetables, and spices.
Serves:
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 4 cups chicken or seafood stock
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Hot sauce (optional)
- Cooked rice (to serve)
Instructions
-
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously until the mixture turns a dark roux (about 10-15 minutes).
-
Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery to the pot and cook for 5-7 minutes, until softened.
-
Add the minced garlic and tomato paste to the pot and stir to combine.
-
Slowly pour in the chicken or seafood stock, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Add the prawns, smoked paprika, dried thyme, dried oregano, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the prawns are cooked through and the gumbo has thickened.
-
Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Serve the gumbo over cooked rice with hot sauce on the side, if desired.
