How To Make Hearty Four-Layer Meat Lasagna
Ingredients
Meat sauce
- 1 lb. Italian sausage
- 3/4 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, minced
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 can tomatoes, crushed
- 2 cans tomato paste
- 2 cans tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 ½ tsp. dried basil leaves
- 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
- 1 tbsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 2 tbsp. parsley, chopped
Cheese sauce
- 16 oz. ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. parsley, chopped
For lasagna
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 3/4 lb. mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 3/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions
Making the meat sauce
- In a Dutch oven, cook sausage, ground beef, onion and garlic over medium heat until browned.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce and water.

Season with basil, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and parsley.

Simmer for about 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
Making the cheese sauce

In a mixing bowl, combine all the required ingredients.

Mix well to break up the ricotta cheese.
Assembling the lasagna

Follow the cooking instructions for the lasagna noodles.

Drain noodles once cooked and rinse with cold water.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Spread 1.5 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Arrange 3 noodles over the meat sauce.

Spread with half of the ricotta cheese mixture, followed by 1/3 mozzarella, another 1.5 cups meat sauce and 1/4 cup parmesan.

Arrange another 3 noodles over this layer.

Repeat layers and top with remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese.

Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 25 minutes.

Uncover and bake for an additional 25 minutes.

Cool slightly and serve warm.
