Ingredients

  • 1 lb dry Great Northern beans
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 smoked ham hocks, bone-in
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Rinse and soak beans overnight in cold water.

  2. Drain and rinse beans before placing them in a large pot with water, onion, garlic, bay leaves, chili powder, paprika, black pepper, and ham hocks.

  3. Bring the pot to a boil. Cover and lower heat to medium-low and allow to simmer for 3 hours.

  4. Remove from heat and discard bay leaves and ham hocks. Separate ham hocks meat from bones using two forks and set aside.

  5. Season with salt to taste and serve with the ham hocks meat on the side.
