How To Make Ham Hock and Sweet Potatoes Recipe

Delicious, tender ham hock with perfectly seasoned sweet potatoes.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 ham hock (approx. 2 lbs)
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.

  2. Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven or large oven-safe pot over medium-high heat.

  3. Add ham hock and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

  4. Remove ham hock and set aside.

  5. Add onion and garlic to pot and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.

  6. Add sweet potatoes, bay leaves, paprika, thyme, salt, and black pepper.

  7. Stir until the sweet potatoes are coated with spices.

  8. Return ham hock to the pot and pour in chicken broth.

  9. Bring to a simmer, then cover with a tight-fitting lid.

  10. Transfer pot to the preheated oven and bake for 2 hours, or until the ham hock is tender and falling off the bone.

  11. Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
