This apple pie recipe cooks in a large baking pan for a fresh look, but the same classic taste. Feel free to serve on any day and any occasion or choose to prepare it for the holidays.
How To Make Farm Pan Apple Pie
A fresh new way of making the same old classic apple pie recipe. Using a baking pan instead of the usual pie pan makes more servings to satisfy their sweet dessert cravings.
- 2 cups shortening
- 5 cups all purpose flour (unsifted )
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 6 cups apples (sliced)
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 3 tbsp water
- Mix shortening, flour, sugar and salt until it is consistency of cornmeal.
- Beat egg yolks and water and vinegar.
- Sprinkle over dry mixture and work until it forms a ball. Let rest.
- Sprinkle apples with lemon juice.
Mix brown sugar, ¾ cup granulated sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to use later.
Divide dough and roll half of it to fit a large 15x11x2-inch baking pan.
- Trim off edges.
- Place half of apples on dough and sprinkle with half the sugar spice mixture.
- Repeat with remaining apple and sugar mixtures.
- Dot with butter.
- Roll remaining dough for top crust and place over filling.
- Make a slit in center of dough and crimp edges.
- Brush top of crust with milk and sprinkle with a small amount of granulated sugar.
Bake at 450 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and cool 20 minutes.
- Make a glaze of confectioners’ sugar and water and drizzle over top.
