German Sweet Chocolate Cake Recipe

This is a simple cake to make, even though you make it from scratch – no box included – you’ll taste the difference.


How To Make German Sweet Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, (4 oz)
  • ½ cup water, boiling
  • 1 cup butter , or other shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 egg yolks, unbeaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 ½ cups Swans Down Cake Flour, sifted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Instructions

  1. Melt chocolate in boiling water.
  2. Cool.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  4. Add egg yolks one at a time and beat well after each.
  5. Add melted chocolate and vanilla; mix well.
  6. Sift together salt, soda, and flour.
  7. Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well. Beat until smooth.
  8. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into 3 8-inch or 9-inch cake layer pans, lining the bottoms with paper.

  9. Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) for 30-40 minutes; cool.

  10. Frost tops only.
