How To Make Funny Cake
Funny cake is a Mennonite dessert that's a cross between a pie and a cake. Enjoy this version with vanilla cake and a gooey chocolate layer!
Ingredients
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
- ½ cup hot water
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp. vegetable oil
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 pie crust, unbaked, 9-inch
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine half cup sugar, cocoa, hot water and half a teaspoon vanilla extract in a small bowl. Set aside.
- In another mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup sugar, egg and oil, then add remaining ingredients.
- Pour creamed mixture into the pie crust and then pour chocolate mixture on top.
- Bake for approximately 45 minutes. Test with a wooden pick for doneness.
