How To Make Sourdough Donuts

Delicious and fluffy donuts made with sourdough starter, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 10 minutes
Total: 2 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the sourdough starter, flour, sugar, milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a smooth dough forms.

  2. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.

  3. Once the dough has risen, add the baking soda and salt to the dough and mix well.

  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. Using a tablespoon, drop small balls of dough into the hot oil and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  6. Remove the donuts from the oil and place them onto a paper towel-lined plate to cool.

  7. Once cooled, dust the donuts with powdered sugar and serve.
