How To Make Brown Bread

Rich in molasses flavor, this brown bread recipe combines cornmeal and 2 kinds of flour for a sweet pastry that’s steamed in coffee cans for a soft crust.

  • 1cupbread flour
  • 1cupwhole wheat flour
  • 1cupcornmeal
  • 1cupmolasses
  • 2cupswater
  • 1tspbaking soda
  • 1tspsalt


  1. In a large bowl, stir together bread flour, whole wheat flour, cornmeal, baking soda. Stir in molasses and water; mix until combined. Pour batter into 2 lightly greased coffee cans, fill about ⅔ full.

  2. Place loaves into a steamer, cover and steam over low heat. Steam for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until loaves are set.

  3. Serve and enjoy.
